Phantom Tollbooth discussion questions, ch. 5-end of book!

I'm really sorry we didn't break this up more for discussion; there's a lot going on in this little book, and it is all pretty cool (sorry you disagree, Jacob--:) )! We'll get in as much conversation about it as we can today. Below are some questions to ponder about the book. If you have your own, please comment and add them to this post!
1. Idioms are used a great deal throughout this book. An idiom is a a phrase with an understood meaning that is different from its actual words (ex. "I'm all ears", "a square meal". Find some examples of idioms in the book and list them here!

2. What does Milo learn in the Land Of Illusions? Why is it important to notice what is going on around us?

3. Chroma- the purity of a color, the saturation of a color or hue. Chromatic- pertaining to color or colors.
~Who is Chroma the Great? Why can’t the instruments stop playing?

4. Definitions:
Discord- lack of harmony, a combination of musical tones that strikes the ear harshly
Dissonance- lack of agreement, inconsistency, a clashing of sounds
Cacophonous (cacophony) - harsh sounding, harsh sounds or words
Din- a loud continued noise
~Discuss why a sound is pleasant or unpleasant. Can a pleasant sound become an unpleasant one?

5. ~Discuss the idiom “jumping to conclusions." How do we sometimes do this?
~Why couldn’t they jump back? Why did they have to swim through the Sea of Knowledge? Discuss how finding out the facts is often times like swimming through a sea, and how it can be difficult and take much effort.

6. Discuss the Subtraction Stew that was fed to Milo, Tock, and Humbug. How can adding leave you with less than you started with?

7. Where did the Everpresent Wordsnatcher (Dirty Bird) really live? Discuss how the bird took what Milo said “out of context”.

8. Discuss what the Terrible Trivium says about meaningless tasks: “There is always something to do that keeps you from what you should be doing.” Is this true? What are some ways we can keep this from happening?

9. Chapter 19 lists several more demons of ignorance:
The Triple Demons of Compromise
The Horrible Hopping Hindsight
The Gorgons of Hate and Malice
The Overbearing Know-it-all
The Gross Exaggeration
The Threadbare Excuse
Dilemma
Which are unknown terms? Define them and describe the negative impacts these things have on wisdom.

10. Pick and discuss from the following ideas and tell what Milo learned about them on his journey: Wisdom (or Common Sense), Time, Ignorance, Fear, Appreciation of Everyday Life, Boredom, Words, or Numbers.

11. What is Milo doing at the end of the book? Do you think he has changed or stayed the same as before he found the Tollbooth?

I'll be road tripping to Texas the 22nd-26th to see my siblings; it will be the first time we've all been together since 1998. Should be interesting. :)

Next Week + More!

Hey bookies!
So next week is our last Thursday meeting before break, and we have a couple different traditions from years past that we like to keep. First, we do a book exchange--

Winter Break Book Exchange:

1. Everyone brings a book to LEND for reading over break (it will be well taken care of), holiday wrapped and ready for the person you chose (if you haven't drawn yet, see me ASAP-- I have names for you!).

2. The book can be either one from your own collection or you may select a library book for your person to check out (meaning YOU check it out, gift wrap it, bring it in and when he/she chooses it, they will in turn check it out to get it off your account).

3. Please try to select something of a manageable size for all-- no War and Peace, no entire Lord of the Rings... you know what I mean! You may, however, select two books if they are very short.

4. Select a book that has meaning to you. Maybe it's a childhood favorite, maybe you read it recently and it's your IT book right now... something that separates it from all the other books you've read!

5. We will meet Thursday the 15th and do our exchange then, along with setting a reasonable reading goal for Phantom Tollbooth.

The second (newest) tradition is that we make this a potluck party! We did this last year, and it was a lot of fun. You guys interested? Here's the sort of things I was thinking that people should bring in, and then we'll have lunch and exchange "presents" (book exchange) and chat and eat and drink:

1. Deli meats (for sandwiches)or other "main dish" items
2. Bread (3 loaves)
3. Veggies (for sandwiches)
4. Chips (assorted)
5. Desserts (")
6. Drinks (")

If we're going to do this, you guys HAVE TO REPLY HERE AND LET EVERYONE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BRINGING FOR THE PARTY. ASAP!

1. In chapter one, what is Milo’s dilemma? Discuss the possible causes of the "crisis" he is having.

2. Once he unwraps the tollbooth, where does Milo decide to go? How does he choose his destination?

3. Where does Milo find himself after he passes the tollbooth? Name and describe this new land!

4. Define these words, and discuss how they are used in the story: doldrums, lethargic, and "weather" vs. "whether".

5. Describe the King’s ministers. Why did they say the same thing in different ways? What was their job in the marketplace?

The Phantom Tollbooth begins!

Hey Bookies! (silly Blogger won't let me add an image right now!)
So let's give this one a try. :) The Phantom Tollbooth is a classic fantasy story by Norton Juster that is celebrating its 50-year anniversary this year. Copies should start arriving Monday, so swing by and pick yours up. And click HERE to check out the Backseat Book Club; NPR is doing Tollbooth as its book club book as well, so there's all kinds of cool stuff to be found on their website, including interviews with the author and http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifreader comments/questions. It'll be fun to see what everyone gets out of this very clever book!

FIRST READING GOAL FOR OUR MEETING ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8TH: I don't know if I'll have books for everyone on Monday (remember, if you can get your hands on your own copy, excellent! Post a comment here letting me know I don't have to find one for you), so let's make the goal pretty easy for week 1; I think everyone should be able to make it to Chapter 4-- Confusion in the Market Place. This is page 45, but keep in mind that there are tons of illustrations taking up space and the font is pretty big. I think it's very doable.

Blue Sword Discussion Questions-- to Chapter 6

All right, so who made it to the page goal? Thoughts so far? Questions? 6th graders, we'll take a vote tomorrow to see who wants to pick a different book. Well, I guess we can see if EVERYONE wants a different book! I'm going to post some discussion questions for the first five chapters for those of you who have hit the goal. Let me hear your thoughts!

1. In the first 3 chapters, we meet a great many characters. With the exception of Harry and Corlath, did any other characters make an impression on you and why?

2. From the first three chapters, what are your general impressions of the Homeland vs Damar/Daria and their respective cultures?

3. What is kelar? What sort of things does it do?

4. What do you think of Harry Crewe? Why do you think she handles being kidnapped so well? What do you predict might happen to her next?

Bookies-- We Have a New Selection!

Our new read is one of my longtime favorite fantasy novels-- The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. It's a 6.1 book level in AR, so it's no easy read; feel free to ask questions here!

We can't meet next Thursday (Mr. Custis is going to ROME, ITALY and I'll be having eye surgery-- gulp), so our reading goal for the following Thursday, November 17th is to read to page 74, chapter six. We'll talk here on the blog until then.

2. How does Ichabod differ from Katrina's other suitors?

3. Who are the Hessian soldiers of the American Revolution? Do some research for this one!

4. Contrast Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones. How are they different in physical
appearance? How are their actions different? What would have made Katrina
attracted to each of them?

5. What evidence is there that Ichabod Crane had an active imagination?

6. Who do the villagers believe the headless horseman is? How did he lose his head?
What do the villagers think he is doing out at night? Why is he said to be in such a
hurry?

1. Clarification-- I will try to find the animated version of this story, but it may be difficult; it's old! Also, when I said it was scary... I was YOUNG. Younger than you guys. So you probably won't think it's scary. As a matter of fact, you'll probably think it's funny. But whatever! It will be fun to watch if I can find it somewhere. :)

How's your summer going, Rattlers?

Mine has been fairly smashing so far, I must say. :) I've gone to Austin to see some college buddies, tube a river and soak in Barton Springs, done some hiking with Miss Mia, gone to see a movie or two, gardened, played a little tennis (not as much as normal-- I've managed a couple of injuries that have really curtailed my normal playing time-- big bummer!), and I've read some really interesting books. What's to come? Maybe a trip to Dallas in early July for my brother's birthday, a definite trip to Duxbury, MA to see my Auntie and my cousins, and possibly a trip to Yellowstone in early August-- all sprinkled with my normal BoCo activities. All in all, a very fun and relaxing summer. Just what the doctor ordered so that the batteries are recharged for '11-'12.

What are you guys up to? Do tell!

As some of you know, I am in two YA book clubs this summer, so I picked out 12 books to read. First, I read Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Loved it. It's short, but good and creepy in a very British sort of way. Next up was Unwind by Neal Shusterman. I would only recommend this book to very mature middle schoolers, but to them, I recommend it highly. This book blew me away, stuck with me for weeks and I couldn't stop talking about it. But it is very, very graphic in parts and it definitely requires a mature mind to process all the topics. Now I see why it was a Blue Spruce nominee! The third book I read was The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, a gothic/romance tale featuring zombies. Don't sound like they go together, right? :) It was good brain candy, albeit a bit dark after Unwind... I must admit, my dreams were disturbed for a few nights! After that, I finished What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell which I was very excited to read and a bit disappointed with when finished. It won the National Book Award and has had tons of praise heaped on it, but it just wasn't my style. I could see some girls really liking it, though! Right now, I'm about halfway done with American Born Chinese, a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, and I'm really enjoying this one. It won the Printz Award for YA Literature. I was recommending it to my friend Ms. Luchies who teaches at Silver Creek, and she says, "I know! I teach that book." Well, blow me down. :)

So that's where I am with my reading so far. What are you guys reading? Anything good? Anything awful?

Mrs. P's Summer Enrichment Classes!

Hey Rattlers!
I'm doing two summer enrichment classes that you guys might be interested in. The first, Books and Blogs, will be a free-reading class during which you will design your own book-review blog! I'll help you will all the nuts and bolts, bells and whistles. :) It will run from 9:00-10:30 AM on June 1-3, 7-10, 14-17, & 21-24. The second class, Good Movie...Better Book, is a class designed to really get you thinking critically about what goes into making a strong film adaptation of some of our favorite reads. Same days, but it will be from 11:00-12:30. If you are interested, come on in to the library and pick up the registration info at the circ desk! Plus, I'll answer any questions you might have.

1. Why, according to Atticus, does Bob Ewell bear a grudge? Which people does Ewell see as his enemies, and why?
2. What explanation does Atticus give for Bob Ewell's attack? What does Heck Tate give as the reason for the attack? Do you think the sheriff's explanation or Atticus's is the more likely to be true?
3. Is Heck Tate right to spare Boo then publicity of an inquest? Give reasons for your answer.
4. How do the events of the final chapters explain the first sentence in the whole novel?
5. At the end of the novel, Atticus reads to Scout. Comment on his choice of story. Does it have any connection with themes earlier in the novel and in its ending?

1. What do you learn in chapter 1 about Maycomb, Atticus Finch and his family?
2. What do you think of the way Atticus treats Walter Cunningham? What do you think Scout learns from Walter's visit?
3. Atticus says that you never really understand a person "until you climb into his skin and walk around in it". What does this mean? Is it an easy thing for Scout to learn?
4. When the children plan to send a letter to the person who leaves the gifts, they are prevented. How does this happen? Who does it, and why might he do so?
5. How well does Atticus feel he should defend Tom Robinson? Is it usual for (white) lawyers to do their best for black clients in Alabama at this time?

I want you guys to be prepared to look up some words to get the meanings, especially in the beginning; this is the most difficult vocabulary we have challenged ourselves with yet! Oh, and feel free to post questions about vocabulary or situational stuff or whatever here; I'll do my best to answer them.

After a three-way tie and vote-off, To Kill a Mockingbird has emerged as the book of choice. We will commence reading as soon as I can get my hands on copies. I put in the order for the lit sets with the district today, but unfortunately, someone else has them checked out until the end of the month. They are due to ship here by the 1st; however, if they come in early, Media Services will send them out ASAP. And so... we wait. I'll keep you posted!

Book Club Meeting Tomorrow Postponed!

Hey Bookies!
Thursday is my birthday, so I'm taking the day to mourn the loss of my youth. :) You'll understand one day. Anyway, I want to be there for the wrap-up discussion of The Alchemyst, so I am decreeing we postpone until next Thursday. I am also suggesting that we have a little Book Finishing celebration-- nothing big, but what if we all brought in a little dessert of some sort? Would that be good? If we don't like that idea, I'll take suggestions... Make your comment (or your sign up to bring in a treat) on this post.

The Alchemyst Discussion Questions

All right, folks-- here are some questions for us today! Answer them here as well so we can get a real blog conversation going. :)

1. Flamel says, “We are all prisoners of a sort here—prisoners of circumstance and
events.” (p. 197) What does he mean? Are Josh and Sophie involved in the battle
between Flamel and Dee because of their destiny, or because they choose to become
involved? What does the codex mean when it says, “The two that are one will come
either to save or to destroy the world”? (p. 199)
2. Why do Josh and Sophie agree to go through the Awakening? Why does Hekate only
“awaken” Sophie’s powers? How does this affect the twins’ connection to each other?
3. What does Hekate mean when she says, “Great change always comes down to the
actions of a single person”? (p. 210) Can you identify times in the history of the world when great change happened because of the actions of a single person?

New Book, Bookies-- come pick yours up!

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flammel is a book that vast the majority of us haven't read (it's like a miracle!), so we jumped on it. For those of you book club members who haven't picked up your copies yet, come see me; I've got six copies available to check out presently, and hopefully I'll be able to procure more as needed. Winter Holidays book(ies) exchange

Hey book club kiddos,

We are meeting tomorrow as usual to discuss HP and where we are in the Deathly Hallows (and to collect permission slips if you haven't already turned yours in!), but here is an early heads-up about our 2nd Annual Winter Break Book Exchange:

1. Everyone brings a book to LEND for reading over break (it will be well taken care of), holiday wrapped and ready for choosing!

2. The book can be either one from your own collection or you may select a library book for your person to check out (meaning YOU check it out, gift wrap it, bring it in and when he/she chooses it, they will in turn check it out to get it off your account).

3. Please try to select something of a manageable size for all-- no War and Peace, no entire Lord of the Rings... you know what I mean! You may, however, select two books if they are very short.

4. Select a book that has meaning to you. Maybe it's a childhood favorite, maybe you read it recently and it's your IT book right now... something that separates it from all the other books you've read!

We will meet Thursday the 16th and do our drawing then. Why don't we make it a Holiday Potluck? Everyone brings in a drink or an eat and we party and exchange books? Sound good?!

I got called out by Nathan for not updating the blog (and all of you Bookies have been called out for not participating on the blog!) so we all need to get it together. :) It's Book Fair week, Nathan, so cut us some slack and come see us Tues, Wed, or Thursday nights! We'll be open for conferences.

Okay, next page goal... Some folks have requested that we read to the end of the book, but let's do one more break. Please read to chapter 25, Westing's Wake, p. 154. And, in the meantime, let's discuss the questions below here:

1. There are many ironic situations and comments in this story---situations where there is a contrast between what it is and what it seems to be. What is ironic about Judge Ford's comment to Angela that "one of these tidbits might cheer you up .I hear you'll be getting married soon." Why wouldn't the Judge's efforts cheer up Angela?

2. Why does Mr. Hoo smile when Mr. And Mrs. Theodorakis's kitchen is ruined from the explosion?

3. After Sydelle was injured she doesn't jump at the chance to get attention for her injury. Why do you suppose that she plays down her pain this time?

4. How do the lives of Angela and Theo parallel those of Violet and Theo's father?

5. Of all the information supplied by the private investigator, which piece do you thinks is the most interesting and relevant to the mystery? Why?

Welcome to all the new Bookies-- we are very glad to have you joining us this year!

Looks like a great list you generated of suggested titles. Unfortunately, I had to eliminate some right off the top, either due to appropriateness for middle school (Kenneth, I LOVE Cat's Cradle, but there's just no way!) or due to the fact that I just can't get enough copies of the suggested book (sorry, Kaari! Only 11 copies of Leviathan in the district, and several of them are checked out), but here's the ones that we can definitely discuss and my thoughts on each as a pick:

1. The Hobbit-- I am a big Rings fan from way back, and I certainly wouldn't mind reading this one again. I would suggest, however, that it not be our first pick; it is long and can be a bit... well, long at times. :) This would be a much better second or third pick, I think.

2. The Westing Game-- This is my pick! I haven't read it, I've wanted to read it, I've heard good things about it, it would be a quick first pick to read, and I know I can get copies. :)

3. Hurt Go Happy-- I don't know much about this book, but did any of you read it in 6th grade? I think they have a literature set of this... Let me know.

4. Ender's Shadow-- We could read this, if you guys decide that is what you want to do. Personally, I would like to start off with something new and different, but we shall let majority decide.

5. Two Little Girls in Blue-- I know next to nothing about this book, so I'm going to ask whoever suggested it to tell us why they picked it for us to read as a group! Sounds interesting on Amazon...

6. The Host-- This book was written for adults, but I didn't see anything overwhelmingly inappropriate when I read it, but it is LONG and I didn't know if we would want to start with a super-long book.

7. The Odyssey-- Hmm... Although my initial response was NO, I am now rethinking that. I still say we should ease our way in with something a little lighter, though!

Okay, you guys have my vote. Let's hear yours! Look the books up on Amazon and teenreads.com to get an idea what you're choices are. Use this post to argue your pick for our first book, and use my next post for VOTES ONLY. Sound good?

Summer is OVER.

Here we are... Back to work. I know you guys have a day to two of sweet sweet summertime left, but I'm back under the fluorescent lights. I can't complain, though; I had a lovely summer! So how is everyone? Analie, you sound fantastic, and I'm jealous of your travels. Let's hear from everyone else! What's new? What have we been reading? I read my six YA books for my class-- Going Bovine (good for you 9th graders, certainly, but a little mature for our collection), Gym Candy (about HS steroid use, very interesting), Fat Cat (chick lit but VERY smart-- loved it!), The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (good if you're into historical fiction), Fire (companion to Graceling-- liked it very much) and Bystander (quick, interesting read about bullying). Unfortunately, I didn't get anything else read this summer, and I really wanted to get Girl with the Dragon Tattoo under my belt so I can watch the movie. That's what fall is for, I guess!

All right, I have to get back to work, but you guys tell me your plans and what you've been up to!

Summertime Conversations!

Garrison just called me out on my slackerness! :) Actually, thanks Garrison-- I've been busy doing this and that and have only thought about the blog when I'm driving which is not conducive to actually working on it. I've updated the design to give it a summertime look-- you like? :)

All right you guys, what have you been up to? What's new? What are you reading? I've taken a trip to Texas to see family and friends, gotten Mia out almost every day, played a lot of tennis and gone to the pool to lounge in the sun and read. It's been really nice! I'm doing my Altona Summer Book Club again, so I'll be reading six Children's/YA books this summer.I just read Fire, the companion novel to Graceling, and I really liked it. I've just begun The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (people have been RAVING about this book, so I've got to see what all of the noise is about!). Wimbledon begins Monday at 4:30 in the morning, so that will keep me busy for a fortnight. Don't know what a fortnight is? Look it up! :)

2nd Reading Goal Discussion

Sorry I missed the meeting today; I was really looking forward to discussing the book. For others not in attendance, we decided to go with a small reading goal for next Friday of p. 300 (chapter 33, The Great River)so that hopefully we can all get caught up and be on the same page. Here were my discussion questions for the 2nd reading goal:

1. The rabbits show amazing powers of adaptation. What have been some of the ways they have adapted to survive so far?

2. Kehaar is one of my favorite characters! What do you guys think he means by “iron road”? What did you think of the author introducing him to Hazel’s warren?

3. Hazel takes a big risk in freeing the hutch rabbits from the farm. Why does he do it?

4. Fiver’s character is changing as this story moves along. How do you see him now as opposed to the beginning of the story?

5. This book was originally written in 1972. What historical situations might the author be referencing in the story, particularly with General Woundwort’s warren, Efrafa?

Meeting this Friday!

Hey Bookies!
So we will have our first meeting in quite a while this Friday. Everyone should have read to Part III, through page 269; please try to be there so we can have a meaningful discussion about the events so far. I'll post some discussion questions for this last reading goal on Thursday.

There is an animated movie version of this book that we can watch as our celebratory wrap-up event; as I recall, it can be pretty brutal in parts as you might be getting a sense of, so as you read be thinking about whether or not you're interested in some lunch-time movie watching. :)

Bookies-- Is anyone reading this wonderful book besides me?!

I can hardly put it down! Okay, it feels weird putting another post on here about reading goals when I don't know where any of you are at this point and no one has responded with any answers to the first round of discussion questions, but here goes. Let's make the goal for the end of spring break to be Part III--Efrafa (p.271). That is a spot that makes sense. I'll post questions for the second reading goal later this week, if and when I hear from some of you and it sounds like you're ready or close-to-ready.

1st round of discussion questions

There's a lot of setting and character building at the beginning of this book-- very heavy on the exposition, but you'll be glad for it later. So, let's start with some pretty basic questions:

1. How does Hazel end up being the group leader? What are his personality traits that allow him to lead? Does Fiver have something to do with Hazel being leader?

2. Rabbits are creatures of habit. How is it that such a relatively large group of rabbits is willing to leave with Hazel and Fiver?

3. Cowslip's warren is very, very strange. Discuss the ways this warren is different from Hazel's.

4. Fiver compares Cowslip's warren to "trees in November" (ch. 14). What does he mean?

5. Both Dandelion and Silverweed recite in the great burrow. How are the two different?

To one and all-- it sounds like most of us aren't where we said we would be, and some of you have grumbled that the book is slow. GIVE IT A CHANCE. Outside of our last book, which I really don't claim as my own pick, have a ever steered you guys wrong? You will like this story, trust me! It's worth your time and effort.

All right, next page goal... What should it be? I say we go to page 173, ch. 22 ("The Story of the Trial of El-ahrairah"), only due to the fact that, once you get to p. 150, you won't want to stop there-- at all. Trust me on that too!

I am excited about this one, folks! It's been a very long time since I have read it, so I am looking forward to the reread. We discussed today that you will have some serious reading time with CSAPs, so we've chosen p. 119, ch. 17 ("The Shining Wire") as our goal. We will not, however, be meeting on next Friday due to CSAP lunch schedule, so please check the blog starting Wednesday to see what discussion questions I come up with. And hey, if you have any suggestions for questions, post them here!

Okay, so I admit, I read this book around five years ago; therefore I am breaking my own rules. I was telling my husband last night that he should read The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night-time after we watched the new HBO movie, Temple Grandin (she's an autistic professor at CSU who revolutionized the way with think about animals and livestock-- look her up!), and it occurred to me: Hey! What about Book Club? It's got elements of a mystery to it, for sure, and it is such a different narrator... it would be a world-view changer for many of you, I am sure. Now, this book is YA, so I want you to do some research and make sure you and your parents are comfortable with you reading it. Then, let's have a vote! Who wants?

We're getting AR (Accelerated Reader) up and running in the library, basketball season is in full swing, Mia's obedience classes are now on Tuesday nights, tennis preseason is upon me, and the Australian Open just started. I'm not short on excuses! Anyway, we decided at the last meeting to read a mystery, and it was stated and agreed that something age-appropriate (YA or 5-8) would be appreciated. Meeting and Book Exchange Thursday!

Nathan came up with a brilliant idea. During our meeting Thursday, let's finish discussing Ender's Game (I believe we got through that book in record time!) and then do a sort of Secret Santa/book exchange. Bring in a (wrapped) book from your collection that you really like or means something to you or whatever that you are willing to loan to someone; we will then draw names and read the lent book over break. The book will be returned to you after we get back. I'll spring for PIZZA again as all of you seemed to enjoy that. Let's make it BYOB. If you guys want to provide something dessert-ish, I'll leave that to you. :) How’s that sound?

Can I just say how happy I am with where I blindly chose to set the page goal? It was perfect! :) Discuss the following:

1. Read Ender’s internal monologue on p. 184. Does it remind you of someone else in the story and how they think? Who and why?

2. The title of chapter 11 is “Veni Vidi Vici,” which means “I came, I saw, I conquered.” Why is the chapter titled this?

3. Why is the fight with Bonzo in chapter 12 important?

4. What is the special relationship between Ender and Bean? What innovations does Bean contribute to the Dragon Army?

I know it's going to be impossible until we all finish the book, but I meant it pretty figuratively. I have a dilemma folks-- it seems the majority of you have finished, but three have not. I think we should only discuss the book tomorrow through the original page goal (227). That way we won't ruin it for anyone.

Rachael, I think printing off teachers' comments is a capital idea! If you would do it, that would be wonderful (copying and pasting them into a word document to save paper would be excellent!).

And, looking ahead to our next book, what would we like to do? We could stick to the one-book theme, or we could each read individually and right after we return, hold a book talking session. Let's vote-- what say you?

I Have a Confession

Due to the weather and my love of hot chocolate and a good book, I read WAY past the goal of chapter 13/p. 227. I have almost finished the novel. Therefore, I will leave it to you guys-- should we stick with the goal as decided, or should we push to finish it by Friday? 1. Is childhood a right? Does a person robbed of a "normal" childhood have any possibility of stability as an adult? Does Ender have any chance of living "happily ever after"?

2. Why is Ender’s being a Third considered negative? What does this tell you about society
on Earth?

3. What can you tell about this society based on the fact that it has produced a place like the
Battle School?

4. Why does Ender keep trying to get past the Giant’s Drink in his game?

5. Read the conversation between Ender and Dink on pp. 120-121. What do you think of
Dink’s point of view? Do you think he’s right?

I'll be honest; I was reading The Road for most of break (absolutely not for kids-- it gave me nightmares, and that's not easy!), so I am BEHIND our goal of 120 pages. I aim to be caught up by Friday, and this book seems like a fast read. I guess Kenneth would agree! {*grumble* finished twice over break *grumble*} I will post some discussion questions tomorrow, but until then, feel free to discuss or ask questions here.

Tomorrow is going to be nuts, so can we discuss pages we would like to read over the next ten days here? I am thinking that the print doesn't look too hard to read... what do you guys say about going for chapter 9, "Locke and Demosthenes", p. 120 by our first meeting the Friday following break? It's a first thought; let me know if you have a different suggestion.

New Book Club Book?

At the end of our meeting today, Mr. Mehsling suggested we read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. No one present had read it (except for him), and I have been meaning to read it forever, so I'm in. We need to hear from Joel, Rachael, Nathan and our newbie, Maya. What do you guys think?

Just so you know, what made him think of it was a brief discussion of the Hunger Games... I think it would be interesting to read and compare the two!

Pizza tomorrow-- + desserts?

Something tells me that it is really poor form to celebrate our finishing this amazing Holocaust book by gorging ourselves on pizza and sweets, but since there's no movie to watch (unless you guys want to watch a really excellent documentary on the Holocaust-- we can talk about that)or anything like that, and it is lunch time, well, we'll eat. :) I'll order the pizza; if you guys can comment here and tell us who will be bringing drinks (sodas or lemonade or whatever) and who will bring desserts, that would be excellent. We'll do a final discussion (BRING YOUR BOOKS!)and then toast with our pizza slices. Oh, and we'll discuss options for our next book-- thanks to Nathan for already coming up with some good suggestions!

So who's in for what?

Just an FYI guys-- I'm not sure what happened, but all of a sudden some serious spam has started to show up in our comments. I'm turning on the comment moderation feature (rather than your comments showing up immediately, they get emailed to me for approval first and then I publish them) for a while until hopefully everything goes back to normal. Last Meeting for The Book Thief this Friday!

Just so we're all on the same page...
We're going to finish the book for our meeting Friday! I definitely haven't read enough this weekend, but I'll get on it tonight. :) I'm still at a loss as to what we should do to "celebrate" finishing this book. Any ideas? We could do a food thing-- order pizza? Everyone bring a dessert to share? What do you guys think?

Okay, I really trimmed down the last New Moon post, so if yours got deleted, I apologize. I don't normally do that-- I try to honor everyone's voice-- but what was there was a little overwhelming. Or underwhelming. :) Anyway, we'll see how it goes here!

I will be adding posts for Life As We Knew It and Diary of a Wimpy Kid as requested. :)

Someone asked whose team I'm on... While I like Jacob as a character, to me he's just not the love story-- the love story is Bella and Edward. So count me on Team Edward I suppose. :) In the book, he's hard not to appreciate!

One of the posts I deleted actually made me stop and think after the fact-- someone said they didn't like Bella, but they liked the books. Now I am sorry I deleted that, because Bella's perceived weakness is probably the most common criticism of the books. So let's discuss it! What do we think of Bella? Is she Every Girl, or is she too weak to represent? Hmm...

18 Days Until New Moon Arrives!

We are coming up with some cool ideas for ways to celebrate this super-cool event, including the same sort of trivia game we ran for Twilight, so keep your eyes on the blog and your ears on the morning announcements for more info. To start, you must decide--

You will have to declare your allegience in the library, and then you will earn points for your team. I think. I'm working on it!

Meeting Monday

There was some confusion, but let's meet on Monday. I thought that's what we had decided at the last meeting; that way everyone should have time to get caught up on pages and we'll all be able to move forward from there.

I am not going to post discussion questions just yet over Part Eight, because I want to give you this forum to ask questions. Has there been anything at all in the book that you are unsure about? Anything you wish to discuss? Let's hear it!

Bookies-- Meet this Week & Discussion Questions!

Hey guys!
After watching the lunchtime traffic for Book Fair and concessions, I am going to request a postponement of our meeting until Monday; it's just too crazy up here for Book Club time. Since I'm putting it off for a full week and some change, are you guys okay with adding on further reading? Let's go to Part Eight, p. 403. That's an additional 53 pages, which should be very manageable (and maybe give some of you time to catch up... KENNETH).

Some questions to ponder and discuss here between now and Monday are below. FYI-- these only go to our original page goal; I will post some for Part Seven after I read that far!

1. Zusak really starts piling on the figurative language and literary devices in this section. What stands out to you? Metaphors, similes, personifcation, foreshadowing, irony, etc... And that's just in the first few pages of our reading! What are some of your favorite pieces of writing (not just examples of the above)? Explain.

2. Max dreams of boxing Adolf Hitler, of fighting to the death, and he trains daily by doing pushups. Why would someone hiding in a basement barely staying alive train for a fight that will never happen? What does all of this represent?

3. What is the seventh side of the die (p. 244-255)? Are there seven sides on a normal die? What does this represent? This section is pretty difficult; what did you think of it?

4. There are a lot of references in the "Death's Diary" sections to actual historical events that you guys may or may not have knowledge of. No one has really asked any questions yet... Do you have any about these sections-- or anything else for that matter?

5. The last line of our page goals is as follows: "They were French, they were Jews, and they were you." What do you think Zusak was saying to the reader? How did this line change the way you were thinking about the book, or how did it make you feel?
